Can the average person fix a problem on the latest years of the Ford Escape?

I'm thinking of buying a 2007 or 2008 model Ford Escape. Can the average person change the water pump, thermostat, alternator, starter, or brakes on these newer cars? I've fixed these things myself on my 1998 Rodeo and want to be able to do the same with the Ford Escape. Can the average person fix a problem on the latest years of the Ford Escape? If you have been able to handle the problems with a 98 Rodeo, then you might be able to resolve the problems that you will face with a newer vehicle. The major difference will be in recovering codes that will set due to sensor malfunctions. Then being able to interpret the code to perform the repair. Diagnostics's is a field that requires more knowledge than the average person possesses. I've been at it for over forty years and get stumped every once in a while. I feel for the person that tries to understand to days cars with all of the new technology.
