Will a 1998 ford taurus transmission work in a 96 for taurus ?

I have a 1996 ford taurus automatic column transmission, that needs a transmission. Does anyone know if the transmission for a 1998 taurus would work for it?Will a 1998 ford taurus transmission work in a 96 for taurus ?There is a very good chance that they will interchange as long as the engines are the same it will just need a lil more info to determine as to that info and such. good luck
