Why does everybody think Henry Ford created the automobile?

Its completely untrue. The first automobile dates back to around 1860 which was the Mercedes-Benz, called the horseless carriage. It ran on Gasoline which was the at the time a Cleaning solution sold at pharmacies. Henry Ford was the first to mass produce the automobile on an assembly line. Just moments ago i was watching a tv show and the main character stated Henry Ford created the automobile, which is not true. You'd think the producer does his research first before he writes false information into the script. Why does everybody think Henry Ford created the automobile?Ford usually gets the credit by some people...others do state that other people had invented it before him but you are correct....he was not the first. And neither is your example if you look at the history of the automobile. A hydrogen powered vehicle was actually invented many years before MB.... around 1808.

"Fran莽ois Isaac de Rivaz (Paris, December 19, 1752 鈥?Sion, July 30, 1828) was a French politician, chancellor, MP, entrepreneur and inventor. In retirement, as a Swiss citizen, circa 1807, he invented a hydrogen and oxygen powered internal combustion engine with electric ignition. In 1808 he fitted it into a working vehicle - 'the world's first internal combustion powered automobile"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_鈥?/a>Why does everybody think Henry Ford created the automobile?Since Fords were the first "massed produced" cars, many people knew about them, unlike the horseless carriage Mercedes-Benz built, in which only a few people had the pleasure of driving. Since many people knew about Fords (since they were MASS produced), they were quick to assume that fords were the first automobiles to be created. Even today, people continue to assume that fords were the first automobiles because thats the only cars they saw people driving in old photos and videos. The reason people bought so many fords is not only because of the fact that it was created on an assembly line. People also bought it because they were cheap, and that the car created many jobs for the jobless. So with the fact that it was plentiful, cheap, and created jobs, alot of people knew about it. Henry Ford, with his name being so simple to remember, has thus become known as one of the wealthiest men in America at the time. Why does everybody think Henry Ford created the automobile?Virtually no one thinks Henry Ford created the automobile. They know that he was the first to mass produce the automobile. Duh.

The first automobile was not created by Mercedes-Benz, it was created by Siegfried Marcus in 1868. Gottllieb Daimler and Karl Benz independently created vehicles (a motorcycle and a tricycle) back in the early 1880s. They didn't work together to make the powered stagecoach (which was NOT called the 'horseless carriage"), until the late 1880s. It was called the 'motorised carriage.' Duh.

Mercedes-Benz didn't even exist until the first part of the 20th century - more than 40 years AFTER you say the company created the "first automobile."
