As usual, best answer gets all the credit. Is Darren Ford of the SF Giants the fastest player in Major League Baseball? It's nearly impossible to tell exactly who the fastest player in the MLB is without seeing them in a footrace. I can't argue with anyone who says guys like Crawford and Ichiro are faster, but I have followed Ford since he was with the Brewers' organization and do have a few facts that can give people some insight to the question.
1) Ford was the NJ state champion in the 55-meter dash in 2004.
2) The the top of the speed scale in MLB's scouting prospectus is 80 and I believe that it stops at 6.3 seconds in the 60-yard dash (anyone who runs faster than 6.3 is rated at 80+). Coming out of high school, Ford was an 80+ runner and I have read several reports (including one from Baseball America) that Ford ran 6.2 several times, including twice in the same day. I can't find where I read it, but I remember sometime a few years back reading that he ran a 6.18. What I'm getting at is that for someone to be a full tenth of a second faster than the time at which the MLB scouting scale ends is a lot and undeniably puts him in the conversation as one of the fastest players in the league.
3) Also, if you go to MLB.com and look for stories about Ford, he was rated as the fastest player in both organizations he's been affiliated with. The Brewers touted him as their fastest player and he is now regarded as the fastest player in the Giants' organization, too. He stole 60+ bases in each of his first three years in the minor leagues and between 30 and 40 the following two. If you saw his stolen base on Saturday night, his speed was evident there, too. Granted, it was a first move steal (he went the moment the pitcher began his delivery), but Kuo is a left-hander (much more difficult to steal on) and he was fully into the base before the ball reached the man covering.
Again, I admit that its impossible to tell who is the fastest man in the MLB without concrete facts, but these are some about Ford that I think at least legitimize his presence in the conversation. Hope this helped! Is Darren Ford of the SF Giants the fastest player in Major League Baseball?
I can stomach people saying that maybe others are faster, but saying that Ichiro is "much faster" than Ford is just completely off base and ignorant. The reality is that Ford is as fast or faster than Ichiro was in his prime, and Ichiro is... not in his prime. Ford = Crawford %26gt; Gardner %26gt; Ichiro
