I just bought a 1996 Ford Windstar Minivan. I am just wondering what anyone can tell me about the vehicle, any opinions good or bad I am just wondering. We bought it for cheap and it needs a little fixing up. It seems like a good ride, but I am just wondering what I should know about it.What can you tell me about a 1996 Ford Windstar Mini van?I have a '95 Windstar with 146K on the odometer.
Poor transmission. See information on Wikipedia on the Ford Windstar.
Mine went out late 2006. Around $2600 in repairs. Still doesn't shift any better.
Head gasket will probably go out sometime during your ownership. They did offer an extended warranty on the head gasket and front springs. Head gasket went out on mine around 95K miles. Ford covered the entire $1600 bill.
Speedometer/Odometer cluster has been replaced twice. Needs to be replaced again. A buzzing will start up and the speedometer needle will swing wildly. Some times when running 65/70 mph, speedo will dip down to 110 mph, then swing wildly back and forth.
Power window motor on driver side has been replaced. Interior lights will stay on when you open and close rear hatch. Idiot light will show rear hatch ajar even when closed. This is caused by a bad switch.
The only rust is in front of right rear tire. Seems to be a common place for rust to form.
I also had the two switches replaced that controlled the two rear vent windows.
One aspect really lacking on the Windstar are the headlights. Fairly weak at best. Add additional running lights.
Good Luck
