Does anyone know what could be causing the pain in my knee?

Ok so my right knee has been bothering me lately. And I'm only a teenager and I'm really athletic so I don't know why I am in pain. Here's the story. Last year in volleyball after a few weeks of training it felt like there was something flapping around in my knee on the inside side of my leg. And I kept playing because it wasnt hurting too bad, mostly if I dove on it. Well then one time during a game I landed on it and I had a really sharp pain and I couldn't walk right away. But after a little while I kind of got it walked off but there was definitely something moving around. The trainer told me I had bursitis and I was feeling an inflamed fluid pocket moving around. So I took a week off and eased my way back into it and got my knee taped when I played and it seemed to be normal again. However it still burned if I tapped right on the spot, but I ignored it because basketball season was starting. Then during basketball sometimes it would be sore but mostly I didn't have any problems. But my hip started hurting also. And I can pop my hip partially out of place, but only on the right side (the same side as my bad knee) Well I iced and applied heat and didn't notice anything again for months, and was fine during track except for the occasional twinge. Recently (volleyball just started) I have been having more pain though. And this is now on the outside side of my leg under my kneecap and down around in the soft part of my knee. It just started when we've been doing a lot of running and jumping and now it hurts all the time. At one point I couldn't walk very well without limping and it was extremely painful to jog lightly. This is the odd part though, I could sprint and move it quickly and it wouldn't hurt. It seemed to only hurt if I would move it slowly or ease into a movement. It hurt to walk up stairs, and if I was standing I couldn't lift my leg and bend my knee to make a 90 degree angle. And if I was laying down I couldn't slowly straighten my leg entirely and it felt like something was going to tear at any second. But I kept playing because I'm stubborn and ignore pain. It got a little better but now it still consistently hurts. Now it cracks a lot when I bend and straighten it. And sometimes when I move it and it doesn't crack, it stiffens up which causes my hip to pop. I tried secretly taping it under my kneepad but that didn't seem to do anything so I quit. I put ice on it and that didn't seem to help either. I don't want my volleyball coach to know or he will bench me so I hopefully heal, and I don't want my parents to know or they will freak out. So I talked to the one person that I tell everything to..my basketball coach. And I asked her if maybe I strained some ligaments or tendons because I don't know that much about knees, and she said it was possible, but would expect more swelling and pain if that was the case. She said she thinks it might have something to do with cartilage damage from all of my running, jumping, and diving. She also said that I should go to the doctor because she isn't one but would be willing to help me out. But I want to learn some more first. So if anyone knows some for sure symptoms of cartilage damage I would love to know. Also if anyone has any other ideas about what could be wrong based on my description please tell me. Remember my pain is currently on the outside part of my knee in that soft gap right beside and under my knee cap. It hurts to slowly bend and straighten it, and also when I lightly jog. It cracks and throws my hip all out of whack. I am grateful for any thoughts, ideas, suggestions, or anything that anyone thinks might be wrong. Thank you so much!Does anyone know what could be causing the pain in my knee?
I think you just need some rest your putting stress on your bones and muscles. I mean you can still practice basketball and volleyball but when your home you should take advantage of that resting period.Does anyone know what could be causing the pain in my knee?
That description does sound like cartillage damage. The actual proper name is 'medial meniscus'. Google it and see if that seem right. Bursitis could accompany that also, what that means is that the capsule around the joint fills up with fluid to cushion something that is not right.

Hope that helps.Does anyone know what could be causing the pain in my knee?
You being athletic could just be the problem, because that means you use your knees a lot and could be putting stress on them. But don't worry, its probably just growing pains (when your bones grow faster than your joints/ligaments)

If you're concerned, see a doctor.
