How do I make my knee stronger?

I popped my knee cap once in 8th grade during a wrestling tourney and then to day during a 1 on 1 game with a friend. He took a shot and I jumped forward to block him and my left foot landed on his foot, and my 2 leg bones I'm guessing just popped out of place and then back in real fast. I know more stuff like this will happen in my basketball career so would like to know some good techniques and exercises to strengthen my knee to avoid these popping knees.How do I make my knee stronger?
lunges will help but you should have your leg checked for torn ligaments to make sure it not that
